Microsoft’s Teams gets a free plan, rivals Slack

Microsoft’s alternative for Slack, Teams, now has a free plan, and it is better than Slack’s.

Microsoft has been working on a workplace communication app since 2016, but it never had a free plan. That has changed, though. In an obvious attempt to one-up Slack, their new free plan is very “aggressive”.

It includes support for up to 300 people – which should cover most small businesses – and includes the following features:

• Unlimited chat messages and search.
• Built-in audio and video calling for individuals, groups, and full team meetups.
• 10 GB of team file storage plus additional 2 GB per person for personal storage.
• Integrated, real-time content creation with Office Online apps, including built-in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote.
• Unlimited app integrations with 140+ business apps to choose from—including Adobe, Evernote, and Trello.
• Ability to communicate and collaborate with anyone inside or outside your organization, backed by Microsoft’s secure, global infrastructure.

Compare that to Slack’s 10,000 message search, only 5 GB of storage, 10 integrations, no guest accounts, and videos are limited to 1-on-1 sessions.

However, Microsoft does have some paid goodies, too! Those who subscribe to Microsoft 365 extra storage, scheduling and recording meetings, security compliance, and more.

So it is quite obvious that Microsoft is targeting Slack users to switch to Teams. There is still no word from Slack whether or not they will do something about this.
