Let’s a Go! Mario is coming to Google Maps and is here to help you with navigation! Or annoy the hell out of you. Depends…
Celebrating Mario Day, or MAR10, Nintendo and Google have teamed up and is bringing Mario to Google Maps. “Mario time”, as Google calls it, will be available in the latest update, coming very soon, most likely today. A new yellow “?” icon will appear next to destinations, which will enable Mario to become the navigation arrow in his kart and accompany you along your commute.
On your navigation screen, you will not have any surprise shells or banana peels. Mario will be available a simple position marker. It will be available worldwide for a week.
Oh, and here is an easter egg for you: if you tap the “?” icon 100 times, you’ll hear the 1-UP sound just like in Nintendo’s games.
This isn’t the first time that Google has done something like this. Google transformed its Maps position marker into either a TIE fighter or an X-Wing back in 2015 to celebrate the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Google Maps also morphed into Ms. Pac-Man for April Fools’ Day last year.
